The Day the Indians Won
Rainforest Foundation US

In 1972, the government of Brazil built a highway through an unexplored
section of the Amazon that was home to the Panara Indians. The Panara--
who had never before encountered outsiders-- were quickly won over by
gifts of machetes, guns, and new foods. But they were unprepared for
the foreign germs that the outsiders also brought in, and by 1975 half
of the tribe had died from disease.
The government moved the Panara to a reservation where they lived for
sixteen years, while ranchers and miners destroyed thousands of acres
of their land. In the early ‘90s their leader decided that enough
was enough, and they filed a lawsuit against the government with the
help of the Rainforest Foundation US. In 2001, after a decade of legal
wrangling, they won a million acres of unspoiled land where they live
today, maintaining their culture and protecting the rainforest.
The Day the Indians Won chronicles the struggles—and
inspiring victory—of the Panara.
